Scientists synthesize nanoparticles through green method

TEHRAN, Sep. 03 (MNA) – Iranian researchers synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles through a green and environmental-friendly method with applications in the production of laser, diode and solar cells.

Numerous chemical studies have been carried out in recent decades to use green synthesis methods. These production methods are eco-friendly and cost-effective. Physical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles highly depend on the size and morphology of the particles. Therefore, new methods have been developed to improve these properties.

According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Counil (INIC), in this research, ionic liquids were synthesized and they were used as a cast for the production of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Ionic liquids are basically eco-friendly and their application in the production of nanoparticles results in reduction of environmental pollution.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles are widely used in industries. Energy gap in these particles is the most important characteristic of the semi-conductive nanoparticles. Size and shape of nanoparticles significantly affect the energy gap and efficiency of the particles. The morphology of nanoparticles has changed from coral type to spherical in this research by using ionic liquids as the cast for the production of nanoparticles. This fact results in a change in sorption area.

Studies have shown that as the length of the chain or anion increases in the ionic liquid, nanoparticles morphology changes and sorption area changes to ultraviolet zone.

Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 42, issue 3, 2016, pp. 3820-3825.
